What Is a Pump Action Shotgun?

A pump action shotgun is a manually operated repeating shotgun. Sliding the forend back ejects the fired shell, and pushing it forward chambers a new one from the tube magazine. Iber Arms manufactures 12 gauge pump shotguns in Beyşehir, Türkiye, in field, home-defense pistol-grip and compact birdshead-grip versions.

Our 20 pump models share 4140 steel barrels, aluminum receivers and 76 mm (3″) chambers, covering hunting, duty and security use. We supply importers, distributors, licensed dealers and government buyers, including private-label builds.

Our features

Why Choose a Pump Action Shotgun?

A pump has no gas system or inertia mechanism to tune, because the shooter’s arm powers every cycle. That makes it tolerant of almost any load, from light target shells to buckshot, slugs and, for authorized users, less-lethal munitions, and it keeps maintenance simple in the field.

Pumps cost less to make than semi-autos and, in many countries, face fewer licensing restrictions; in South Africa, for example, a pump shotgun can be licensed for self-defense while a semi-auto cannot. The trade-offs are more felt recoil than a gas semi-auto and slower follow-up shots unless the shooter is well practiced.

Pump Action Shotgun FAQ

A pump action shotgun is a repeating shotgun that the shooter cycles by hand. Pulling the forend back ejects the fired shell, and pushing it forward loads the next shell from the tube magazine and locks the action. It needs no gas or recoil to operate, so it handles almost any load. Our pumps are all 12 gauge with 76 mm (3″) chambers.

It depends on the magazine tube and local law. Our pumps are listed from 2+1 (two shells in the tube plus one in the chamber) up to 10+1. Hunting rules often require 2+1 or 3 shells in total, the UK Section 2 certificate allows two in the magazine, and Australia’s Category C allows up to five.

Both can work where the law allows a shotgun for self-defense. A pump is simpler, cheaper and cycles any load, but needs practice to avoid short-stroking. A semi-auto recoils less and fires follow-up shots faster. License rules can decide for you. In South Africa, for example, only non-semi-automatic shotguns qualify for a self-defense license.

Yes. Pumps are among the most widely used hunting shotguns because they are reliable, affordable and handle everything from light bird loads to slugs. Our walnut and synthetic field pumps take 61 to 71 cm (24 to 28″) barrels and interchangeable Mobil-type chokes, and can be supplied with 2+1 capacity where hunting rules require it.

It is a pump shotgun whose stock has a separate pistol grip, like a rifle, instead of a traditional curved wrist. The grip gives control with heavy loads and suits duty and home-defense guns. Our IB-PA05 and IEU-PA-19 use pistol-grip stocks; the compact birdshead-grip models have a pistol grip only, with no shoulder stock.

It depends on the country and the exact configuration. In the US, classification turns on barrel length, overall length and whether the gun was ever fitted with a shoulder stock, and a stocked gun with a barrel under 18 in is an NFA short-barreled shotgun. In the UK, short pump-action shotguns are prohibited. Confirm with your importer and the authority before ordering.

No. Our pump shotguns are conventional tube-fed designs. Our bullpups (IB-BP01 and BP02) and magazine-fed models (IB-MF and IUE-MF series) are gas-operated semi-autos with detachable box magazines. For a high-capacity manual action, our double-barrel pump shotguns use two magazine tubes holding 10+2 to 16+2.

Our pump shotguns are 12 gauge only. For .410 bore we offer the magazine-fed IB-MF20, the revolving-cylinder RV01 to RV03 and over/under models; see our .410 shotguns guide. In 20 gauge we offer the magazine-fed IB-MF15 to MF19, the IUE-SAS semi-autos and over/unders.

No. Iber Arms sells only to importers, distributors, licensed dealers and government or law-enforcement buyers. Private buyers should contact a licensed dealer or importer in their country. Trade buyers can request quotations and samples through our inquiry form.

Yes. We build pump shotguns as OEM or private label with your logo, finish, furniture, barrel length, capacity and choke package. Evaluation samples are available, and we accept orders of any quantity. Ask our export team which proof marks and certificates are available for your market.

How does a pump action shotgun work?

The forend is connected to the bolt by action bars, so the shooter’s hand does the work a gas system does in a semi-auto. Here is the cycle step by step.

  1. Loading. Shells are pushed into the tube magazine through the loading port under the receiver; cycling the action chambers the first one.
  2. Firing. Pulling the trigger releases the hammer. Before firing, the action stays locked until the slide release is pressed.
  3. Forend back. The action bars drive the bolt rearward; the bolt unlocks, the extractor pulls out the empty hull and the ejector throws it clear.
  4. Feeding. Near the end of the stroke, the shell latch releases the next shell onto the carrier, which lifts it into line with the chamber.
  5. Forend forward. The bolt chambers the shell and locks; the hammer is cocked and the gun is ready to fire.

Short-stroking, or not pulling the forend fully rearward, is the most common user-induced stoppage, so full, firm strokes are part of basic training.

A brief history of the pump shotgun

The first commercially successful pump shotguns appeared in the 1880s and 1890s. Post-war designs of the 1950s and 1960s set the layout most modern pumps still follow, with twin action bars, a tube magazine and a sliding forend. Today many of the pump shotguns sold worldwide are made in Türkiye, with production concentrated around Beyşehir in Konya province.

Types of pump action shotgun

Field and hunting pumps

Full stocks in walnut or synthetic, 61 to 71 cm (24 to 28″) barrels, ventilated ribs and interchangeable chokes for birds, plus slug setups for deer and boar.

Home-defense and duty pumps

Pistol-grip stocks, 47 to 51 cm (18.5 to 20″) barrels and sights or rails, for security, police and home defense where legal.

Compact birdshead-grip pumps

Pistol-grip-only guns without a shoulder stock, with short barrels and railed handguards, for vehicle and specialist roles where the law permits them.

Double-barrel tactical pumps

Two barrels fed by two magazine tubes, from 10+2 to 16+2. See our double-barrel pump shotguns.

Some makers also offer bullpup or box-magazine pumps. Our bullpup shotguns and magazine-fed shotguns are gas semi-autos rather than pumps.

Advantages and disadvantages of pump shotguns

Advantages

  • Cycles almost any 12 gauge load, including low-recoil and specialty rounds
  • Simple, robust and easy to maintain
  • Lower cost than a semi-auto
  • Fewer legal restrictions in many markets
  • The shooter decides when the next shell is chambered

Disadvantages

  • More felt recoil than a gas semi-auto of similar weight
  • Slower follow-up shots
  • Short-stroking under stress without training
  • Manual cycling is harder for some shooters, especially from awkward positions

What are pump action shotguns used for?

  • Hunting walnut and synthetic field pumps with 61 to 71 cm barrels for birds; slug configurations with open chokes for deer and boar where shotguns are used.
  • Home defense where legal. Pistol-grip pumps with 47 to 51 cm barrels are a long-standing choice, provided the owner’s license allows it.
  • Law enforcement and security pumps remain common patrol and less-lethal platforms because they cycle whatever load the officer chambers.
  • Sport practical-shooting rule sets often include a manual-action division, and a pump is an inexpensive way into clay shooting.

Chokes and ammunition for 12 gauge pumps

All our pumps have 76 mm (3″) chambers and accept 70 mm (2¾”) and 76 mm shells. Mobil-type interchangeable choke tubes cover the main jobs, as listed below.

ChokeTypical use
Cylinder / improved cylinderSlugs, close-range buckshot, close-flushing birds
ModifiedGeneral hunting at mixed distances
Improved modified / fullLong passing shots, trap

With steel shot, follow the choke tube markings and avoid tight chokes not rated for steel. Fire slugs only through open chokes or chokes rated for slugs.

How short barrels and birdshead grips are classified

Several of our pumps list a 37 cm (14.6″) barrel, and the compact models use birdshead pistol grips without a shoulder stock. These configurations are lawful in some markets and tightly controlled in others.

  • United States a shotgun with a shoulder stock and a barrel under 18 in (45.7 cm), or an overall length under 26 in, is an NFA short-barreled shotgun that must be registered. A pistol-grip-only firearm on a shotgun-type receiver is classified by its exact barrel length, overall length and history, such as whether it was ever fitted with a shoulder stock, and importability is a separate test. Buyers must confirm the exact configuration with their importer and ATF.
  • United Kingdom pump-action smooth-bore guns with barrels under 24 in or an overall length under 40 in are prohibited weapons under Section 5.
  • Canada barrel-length and overall-length thresholds can change a firearm’s class; check the RCMP Firearms Reference Table for the exact model.
  • Mexico the LFAFE reserves shotguns with barrels shorter than 635 mm for the armed forces.

We do not advise on modifying any shotgun. Order only a configuration your importer or authority confirms is lawful.

CountryKey points for pump shotguns
United StatesPumps with barrels of at least 18 in and overall length of at least 26 in are regular shotguns under federal law. Imports need a licensed importer (FFL Type 08/11) and an ATF Form 6 permit, and the configuration must meet the “sporting purposes” criteria. States such as California and New York add their own limits.
CanadaPump shotguns are generally non-restricted, and the 5-shell cap applies to semi-automatic, not manually operated, shotguns. Classification still depends on barrel and overall length; verify each model in the RCMP Firearms Reference Table.
AustraliaPump-action shotguns are Category C (magazine of 5 rounds or fewer, available only to limited groups such as primary producers) or Category D (more than 5).
United KingdomSection 2 shotgun certificate if the magazine holds no more than 2 cartridges and the barrel is at least 24 in; otherwise Section 1. Pumps with barrels under 24 in or overall length under 40 in are prohibited (Section 5).
South AfricaUnlike semi-autos, pump shotguns can be licensed for self-defense under section 13 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. Imports need a SAPS import permit.
SpainShotguns require a licencia E and guía de pertenencia issued by the Guardia Civil.
MexicoCivilians buy only through SEDENA’s DCAM; the LFAFE reserves shotguns with barrels under 635 mm for the armed forces (check the current text).

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Unload and confirm the chamber and magazine are empty before cleaning.
  • After use, clean the bore and wipe the bolt, action bars and receiver; a light film of oil on the action bars keeps the stroke smooth.
  • Remove the barrel periodically to clean the magazine tube and check the magazine spring and follower.
  • Clean and lightly grease choke threads, and dry walnut stocks after rain.
  • Store unloaded and secure, in line with local law.
